Yahya Hasan A. Qader. (Department of  Education, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48824. Factors influencing the Satisfaction of Muslim Organization Members in the Greater Lansing, Michigan, Area. 1988)
Abstract: In conducting this study, the main objectives were (a) to explore various relationships between Muslim organization members' satisfaction with life and the academic domain and certain demographic variables; (b) to examine a proposed typology of human behavior, taking into account normative values as a point of departure; and (c) to evaluate the validity of measures of subjective phenomena, namely religiosity and satisfaction with the academic domain. To serve these objectives, the literature on small groups and organizational theory was discussed. Life satisfaction as related to contextual variables was reviewed, and measurement scales were constructed. The purpose of this study was to measure the relationship between certain demographic variables--namely, age, marital status, length of residence in the United States, and ethnic background--and satisfaction with life and the academic domain, as evaluated by members of a voluntary organization--the Islamic Center of Greater Lansing, Michigan. Probability sampling was used in sample selection (N = 115). Survey (questionnaire and interview), case study, and personal observation were used as methods of inquiry. The response rate was 58%. Three measures were designed for the study variables: academic domain, life satisfaction as a whole, and religiosity. The analysis plan was divided into four stages: modification of the data, coding-recoding, computer simulation, and data analysis. The major statistical tools used were a t-test and cross-tabulation. Multiple regression was used for possible controls. Principal-component factor analysis was also used. Twenty four hypotheses were tested.Only six hypotheses were rejected, whereas 18 hypotheses were not rejected for no difference between the study groups. The sample's satisfaction with past, present, and expected future life was 5.00, 4.84, and 5.66, respectively. Concerning academic domains, three of the nine items (satisfaction with professors, with mass media, and with the English language) were significant at the .05 level among Arab and non-Arab Muslim respondents.
Yahya Hasan A. Qader. Comparative Analysis of Social Change in the Muslim Nations, U-M-I Dissertation Information Center. (1991)

Abstract: The main purpose of this research was to study aspects of social changing education, housing, health, labor force composition, and participation in Muslim nations in two periods: 1975 and 1985. Further, the researcher compared the extent of change among Muslim countries in these aspects, and tested hypotheses concerning relationships between infant mortality (as the endogenous variable) and adult literacy, women's participation in the labor force, access to piped water, population density, and GNP percapita (as exogenous variables).
Thirty-six nations constituted the study sample. Using secondary data, t-test, multiple regression, analysis of variance, path analysis, and correlations were used as statistical techniques in analyzing the data.
Results of the t-test showed that a significant change had occurred between 1985 and 1975 in the education, health, housing, labor force composition, and political participation areas, whereas no significant difference was observed in female enrollment in schools and citizen participation indicators.
Results of the analysis of variance showed that both significant differences were found in geographic location, ethnic background, political type, and oil production. Significant differences were found between Asian and African nations in women's participation in the labor force and adult literacy. Between Arab and non-Arab Muslim nations, the null hypotheses concerning infant mortality, women's participation in the labor force, and GNP per capita were rejected.  The null hypotheses concerning republican and non republican nations in infant mortality, access to piped water, and GNP per capita were rejected. The null hypotheses concerning oil and non oil-producing nations was rejected only on GNP per capita.
Path analysis results showed that 9 out of 11 hypotheses were in congruity with expectations. However, hypotheses concerning the relationships between women's participation in the labor force, and between adult literacy and population density, were opposite to expectations, having a negative rather than positive sign. The findings suggest that change had occurred in certain areas but not others in these countries' transition from the traditional to the modern. The implications of social change theory are highly desirable area for further research, especially using historical comparative analysis and path-analysis techniques.

Yahya, Hasan A.  (Department of Sociology-Education, Michigan State University, East Lansing, 48824) Theory C.of Conflict Management: A New Role for Sociologists.*
Abstract: Theory C. is a method of replacing A and B groups' status images about each other by status images of totality of both. Certain variables are utilized serve that purpose, they are: disseminating knowledge, promoting understanding, sharing appreciation, and willingness to compromise. The new theory depends on the argument that: 1) social science is made for human beings not to serve one's ideology or culture; 2) rejecting religious assumptions about human nature with no evidence should remain a false assumption until it proved to be true; 3) Two inhuman stages of creation occurred before human creation; 4) the three Comtean stages (or any other classifications-dychotomies, across history) are fractions of only one stage of human development; 5) existed conflict management theories have their limitations. Thus, Theory C. is introduced utilizing comperative historical analysis. Further, the "sociotherapist" role is proposed in the light of the new theory and possible techniques to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict are applied.

Yahya, Hasan A.Innovation and Life Satisfaction: A Case Study of Muslim Group.* (Department of Sociology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, 48824, Michigan)

Abstract: This paper begins with a discussion of various approaches to studying communities and an examination of the analytic scheme and field research methodology. Followed by procedural problems encountered the investigation. Muslim belief and practices and Islamic norms and values are explained. Finally, the data gleaned from the case study concerning innovation and satisfaction according to contextual variables were discussed.

Yahya, Hasan A. Measurement of Qualitative Social Phenomenon: Domains of Life Satisfaction among University Students. (Department of Sociology, Michigan State U, East Lansing, 48824, Michigan

Abstract: Two qualitative measures (Cantril’s self-anchoring scale & Campbell’s 5-point scale) were combined in a study of life satisfaction. Three scales were constructed to measure life satisfaction in general, life domain satisfaction, & religiosity, with reliability coefficients (ALPHA - .66. .86. & .64, respectively), using data obtained via a mail questionnaire survey of a systematically selected sample of university students (N = 95). Utilizing a t-test, significant differences were found in evaluating life domains satisfaction-family, friends, weather, & university environment-according to ethnic background, country of origin, age, & marital status.

Yahya, Hasan A. Population Density and Economic Growth in the Middle East: Comparative Analysis. (Department of Sociology, Michigan State U, East Lansing, 48824, Michigan

Abstract: In an analysis of cross-cultural data on growth, development, & change, 5 social aspects were measured-education, housing, health, employment, & political participation-using data obtained from UN files & demographic yearbooks for 1975 & 1985 for a sample of 11 countries. Findings of comparative, t-test, & regression analyses show that economic growth has occurred in all these areas but political participation. The deviation of some countries from modernization assumptions concerning religiosity is discussed, taking into account the nation’s rank.

Yahya, Hasan A. Preliminary Findings on Assimilation among Immigrants from the Middle East. (Department of Sociology, Michigan State U, East Lansing, 48824, Michigan

Abstract: An attempt was made to develop, examine, & test physical, intellectual, & spiritual phases of assimilation. Ten indicators were factor analyzed with a reliability test (ALPHA - .68) of the 3 faces, using a t-test of mail survey data obtained from a sample of 125 immigrants. Findings show that the proposed phases interpret the process of assimilation accurately. Twenty-one hypotheses were rejected where significant differences were found using the 3 phases for the context variables: length of stay, age, marital status, number of children, ethnicity, size of city of origin, & level of education.

Yahya, Hasan A. Principles of Islamic Sociology: The experience of the Muslim Social Scientists in the United States. (Department of Sociology, Michigan State U, East Lansing, 48824, Michigan

Abstract: The Islamization of Knowledge has been proposed by Muslim social scientists in North America as a paradigm to be introduced to higher education students in the social sciences, in particular, sociology. While the concept; has been applied in anthropology, political science, & economics, it has not yet been successful in sociology, where much of the debate has been focused on qualitative rather than quantitative grounds. An attempt is made to analyze, discuss, & contrast such experience in sociology in the USSR & US. A comparative approach is explored, & a possible framework for Islamic sociology suggested. In the process, classical & contemporary Muslim social thought is reviewed.

Abstract: “Theory C” of conflict management is expanded as a method to resolve macro & and micro conflict situations. The fundamental rules of the theory are reintroduced, & an attempt is made to apply its framework to Native & African Americans through five stages: creating intention, disseminating knowledge, promoting understanding, sharing appreciation, & compromising or making concessions.

Yahya, Hasan A. Opinions Concerning Socio-Political Issues in a Newly Muslim Democratic Albania, (Lansing Community College, Lansing, Michigan, 1994).

Abstract: This study is the first of its kind to be conducted in the newly Muslim democratic state shifted from extremist Marxist-Leninist system to a free market system, namely, Albania. A snowball directed sampling (N=302)was utilized to explore certain opinions in Terane, Saranda, and Shkoder about socio-political issues: political party preference, economy, and future political forms for Kosove. Findings were in congruity with the study’s expectations in the economic models issue only. Findings on other issues were contrary to these expectations. It is recommended, however, utilizing systematic sampling, case study and interview approaches are necessary methodologies for more accurate opinion exploration of socio-political issues for the purpose of enhancing the decision making power, policy planning, and conflict control.

Yahya, Hasan A. Exploring Problem-based Learning among Zayed University students, Dubai campus

Abstract: Global challenges of the future imply increased interest in the use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as a modern method of instruction. The principle goal of U.A.E higher education is to advance the U.A.E. as a participant in a modern, global society. Zayed University (ZU) is a newly established University at United Arab Emirates to better prepare national students for these challenges. It selected a very highly qualified instruction team to fulfill that purpose. The paper explores the problem-based learning (PBL) as a student-centered method for the promotion of leadership, problem solving, and participation skills among Zayed University students in its first year. It is expected to develop awareness and communication skills through group interaction and feedback. It is expected also to promote learners ability to get actively involved, work cooperatively, respect others' talents, and make decisions. A selected purposive sample of two academic levels of female students was used. Findings show leadership, problem-solving, and participation skills were different among groups. Group solidarity and effectiveness were also observed. Recommendations conclude the paper.

Introduction: Global challenges of the future imply increased interest in the use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as a modern method of instruction.

This paper explores the problem-based learning (PBL) as a student-centered method for the promotion of leadership, problem solving, and participation skills among Zayed University students in its first year. It is expected to develop awareness and communication skills  through group interaction and feedback. It is expected also to promote learners ability to get actively involved, work cooperatively, respect others' talents, and make decisions. Recommendations conclude the paper.

Method

A selected  purposive sample of two academic levels of female students was used.  One original group with tutor role minimized, and a control group with tutor role maximized at Zayed University-Dubai campus. The original group was encouraged to select a name for the group to practice communication skills and interaction.  Future Bureau for Research  (FBR) was selected. While the other group did not select any name. Problem-based learning (PBL) was used as a framework method of instruction in both groups, with the emphasis on tutor role in the second group.

Results

Leadership, problem-solving, and participation skills were observed among group members. Group solidarity  and effectiveness were also observed with a significant difference between the two groups. The FBR group (Level 2) was more active in discussion, have higher grades, and was more cooperative than level 3 with the same instructor. The use of  Problem-based learning (PBL) as a method of instruction was more effective in level 2 than level 3.
